Australian fashion retailers are grappling with soft mid-year demand, according to the latest Fashion Retail Index compiled by The Retail Score. The index, which monitors revenue across clothing, footwear and accessories, shows the sector still faced challenging conditions in August.

On a like-for-like basis, total sales rose by 0.9% compared with August 2025. Units sold increased by 0.2%, while transaction counts grew modestly by 0.4%. The modest lift reflects lingering consumer caution.

Standalone stores broke the trend, posting a 2.1% rise in comparable sales year over year. This improvement helped offset a 0.5% drop in online sales—the first annual decline recorded for the channel in several years.

The department-store segment remained under pressure, with concession sales slipping 2.7%. Outlet performance was barely negative, falling 0.2%.

Retailers intensified promotions and discounts across all channels as they worked to clear winter inventory after an unusually warm season. The aggressive pricing pushed many items below their typical price points.

Analysis of the data points to price levels as a key driver of the differing outcomes. In standalone locations, transaction volumes rose slightly by 0.2%, but average selling prices climbed more than 1.5%. The price increase, together with the modest transaction gain, delivered the 2.1% sales growth.

When consumers encounter higher price tags, even a small rise in foot traffic can translate into meaningful revenue gains. Conversely, lower prices may boost volume but not enough to offset reduced margins.

Online sales saw transaction volumes rise by a healthier 2.5%, yet average prices fell 1.2%

Concessions experienced a similar dynamic. A slight drop in transactions combined with a 2.6% fall in average selling prices placed noticeable pressure on revenue.

Despite the mixed results, the sector still posted growth, and the strong showing from physical stores offers a silver lining. Retailers now look ahead to spring campaigns, hoping to generate momentum before an anticipated long, hot summer.
