India’s athleisure market is projected to grow from $18.3 billion in 2025 to $47.2 billion by 2033.

India’s athleisure market is expanding beyond its traditional fitness roots, driven by rising demand for comfort, versatility, and performance in everyday wear. Industry estimates project the market to grow from approximately US $18.3 billion in 2025 to US $47.2 billion by 2033, reflecting a compound annual growth rate of 12.7%. This growth is supported by structural shifts, including an expanding fitness and wellness economy and changing consumer habits.

India’s fitness infrastructure is also growing, with around 46,500 fitness facilities currently and an expected 65,500 by 2030. Concurrently, consumers are incorporating activewear into daily activities such as errands, commuting, and casual outings. Research from Cotton Incorporated highlights that Indian shoppers prioritize comfort, quality, fit, stretch, and breathability, even when purchasing for non-workout purposes.

Several Indian brands are adapting to this shift. CAVA Athleisure targets premium urban consumers, identifying women aged 22 to 38 as its core demographic while noting a growing men’s segment. Feier, a Mumbai-based brand, caters to women aged 24 to 40 seeking functional essentials, while TechnoSport emphasizes accessible performance wear, with a male consumer base aged 22 to 40, particularly in non-metro areas. ZONE, which specializes in children’s activewear, targets parents purchasing for kids aged 4 to 14.

Brands Target Diverse Demographics

The transformation in consumer behavior is evident in how activewear is used. CAVA’s co-founders note that customers now wear their products to work, brunches, flights, and social events, not just gyms. “Studio to street” transitioning has become the fastest-growing use case, according to Shreya Mittal. Puspen Maity, CEO of TechnoSport, echoes this, stating that activewear is now part of daily wardrobes, with demand for items like performance T-shirts and joggers increasing significantly.

For children’s activewear, Archana Khosla Burman of ZONE observes that kids wear it for school activities, travel, and playdates, making it an everyday essential. This broader adoption is pushing brands to develop versatile, durable products that meet functional needs beyond physical activity.

Children’s Activewear Becomes Everyday Essentials

Consumer spending patterns also reflect this evolution. Customers across segments weigh price against quality, functionality, and design. CAVA’s clientele seeks premium products that justify their cost, while Feier benefits from Mumbai-based manufacturing that delivers international quality without premium pricing. TechnoSport’s vertically integrated model supports accessible pricing, with an average transaction value of approximately 2,000 and 4.5 units purchased per transaction, indicating cross-category buying.

The expansion into Tier II and III cities is accelerating. CAVA identifies Indore, Jaipur, Chandigarh, Lucknow, Kochi, and Surat as key growth markets. These areas prioritize comfort, durability, and value, differing from metro consumers who emphasize design and occasion-based versatility.

Tier II Cities Accelerate Market Growth

CAVA sees potential in men, pre-teen girls, and Tier II premium buyers, while Feier focuses on Tier II/III markets and the “everyday mover” — women seeking versatile clothing for daily life. ZONE anticipates continued demand for premium children’s activewear.

Repeat purchasing is rising, driven by everyday utility. CAVA notes a doubling of returning revenue from 23% in 2023 to 40% in early 2026, with customers building wardrobes across categories. TechnoSport’s clients refresh collections every three to six months, reflecting sustained engagement.

Consumer Spending and Value Considerations

Today’s consumers across segments prioritize quality and functionality when determining value, with brands responding by aligning offerings to justify premium pricing. CAVA’s clientele seeks products that combine lifestyle appeal with performance, reflecting a willingness to pay more for items that serve multiple purposes. TechnoSport’s vertically integrated model allows it to maintain affordability while emphasizing advanced features like moisture management and breathability. ZONE’s parents, meanwhile, value durability and long-term performance in children’s activewear, balancing cost with the need for versatile, everyday clothing.

Puspen Maity of TechnoSport highlights that consumers increasingly expect activewear to transition seamlessly across workouts, commuting, and daily routines. This drives product development focused on lightweight comfort and resilience, as seen in the brand’s performance T-shirts and joggers. For Feier, the Mumbai-based production base ensures rapid response to market demands, enabling the creation of functional pieces tailored to urban lifestyles. CAVA’s strategy of building “studio to street” wardrobes through cross-category purchases reflects a broader trend of consumers investing in versatile, high-quality items that extend beyond traditional fitness use.

Consumer Loyalty and Purchasing Habits Evolve

Shreya Mittal of CAVA observes that Tier II customers may take longer to convert but demonstrate strong loyalty once engaged, contrasting with metro buyers who seek occasion-specific versatility. TechnoSport’s retail network spans emerging markets, targeting families and younger demographics, while its average transaction value of 2,000 and 4.5 units per purchase highlight cross-category buying habits. The 90-day cohort retention rate for CAVA has more than doubled in two years, signaling sustained consumer engagement.
