Marks & Spencer has rolled out a fully integrated Christmas effort, the first to combine food, fashion, home and beauty since 2017.

Festive film blends tradition and retail

Actor James Norton appears as an undercover Santa, while Lucy Punch portrays Mrs Claus, who convinces him to shave his beard, trade the red suit for a jumper and leave the North Pole.

The storyline follows the newly groomed Santa as he dresses, sets a holiday table, selects gifts and decorates a home, giving each retail category a role in the narrative.

Rather than locating magic at the North Pole, the film shifts it to the everyday rituals people share around tables and under trees.

“It’s not every day you get asked to play Santa, let alone a Santa who immediately shaves off his beard! M&S has been such a familiar part of Christmas for as long as I can remember, so getting to be part of its Christmas campaign feels really special,” Norton said.

He added, “I loved that this story takes such an iconic character and lets us see him differently. He gets to experience Christmas like the rest of us, discovering that the real magic is in the food, traditions and moments we share with the people we love.”

Singer Katherine Jenkins provides a re-worked version of Belinda Carlisle’s “Heaven Is a Place on Earth,” recorded with producer Fraser T Smith and composer Tom Howe, and released alongside the initiative today.

Retail strategy and sales impact

Marketing director Sharry Cramond explained, “Customers don’t think about Christmas as one meal, one gift or one outfit. They think about all the moments that make the season special. As the only retailer with a truly cross-category offer, M&S helps customers create Christmas from start to finish.”

The retailer highlighted non-food festive sales: about 1,800 Christmas jumpers are sold each day, a pair of pajamas disappears roughly every four seconds, and last year shoppers bought 125,000 sparkle tees and crew knits.

Advertising will appear on television, video-on-demand, cinema, outdoor boards, social platforms, radio, digital displays and print, while the Pantheon store on Oxford Street becomes a “Home of Christmas” showcasing the full festive range.

The flagship location, nearly 100,000 sq ft across four floors, was revamped in July to unite food, fashion, home and beauty. Interim results showed a 27% rise in sales on fashion, home and beauty floors since the reopening.

On digital channels, the “Friends of M&S” community will share curated “Love That Lists” featuring desired gifts, meals, apparel, beauty items and décor, extending the platform that launched with a previous autumn/winter push.
